Gasoline is one of the most watched prices in America, because nearly everyone buys it and the sign at the station changes in plain sight. In dollars, the average price of a gallon has moved up over the past decade, with plenty of swings along the way. Measured in Bitcoin, it moved the other way. The orange chart divides the dollar price by the four year average Bitcoin price, which smooths out Bitcoin's large short term swings.

Gas is also a reminder that prices move for many reasons at once: oil supply, refining, taxes and seasons all play a part. This page does not untangle those causes and it does not predict where either line goes next. It only records the same price with two different rulers.
